Context
Global clinical trial systems play a critical role in pandemic preparedness, routine health research and evidence generation. The World Health Organization required a clear, evidence-based understanding of clinical trial infrastructure across countries to guide policy, coordination and investment decisions.
Challenge
Clinical trial infrastructure across networks, research sites, regulators and funders was fragmented. The challenge was to identify where capacity gaps, coordination failures and structural weaknesses existed, so that scalable interventions could be designed to improve clinical trial efficiency and system resilience.
Approach
Gawani delivered a detailed scoping study building on earlier work. This included mapping clinical trial networks and site capacities, compiling relevant data, conducting stakeholder interviews and benchmarking global best practice for oversight and coordination.
The study produced a gap analysis across governance, regulatory harmonisation, site readiness, data systems and financing. Findings were then translated into actionable strategic recommendations.
Outcome
The scoping study gave decision-makers a clear roadmap for strengthening clinical trial systems. It supported better resource allocation, informed policy dialogue on network coordination and regulatory alignment, and helped guide funder planning for targeted investments.
Sustainability
By identifying practical areas for investment in site capacity, data platforms and governance mechanisms, the work strengthened the foundation for more coordinated, resilient and high-quality multi-country clinical research.
